If I were going to start at the beginning; then I would start with a class called Perspectives. I took it about a year and a half ago, and in it I first really started feeling God tugging my heart towards missions. Then the economy tanked, Cessna began laying off people by the thousands, and I learned about a mission organization called Youth With a Mission (YWAM). They have a 6 month program called Discipleship Training School (DTS). It really didn’t take much for me to figure out that, if I got laid off, this is what I should do next. In June, three rounds of lay-offs later, I made the biggest step of faith of my life and took a voluntary lay-off plan instead of waiting endlessly for my number to be up. I have to be honest, though. I would not have had the courage or even the faith to make this decision if my good friend, Angela, had not decided to make this step of faith also. But, decide we did, and it was awesome. I grew and changed in life changing ways. God started calling me to continue with YWAM from the moment I stepped on base. In a new step of faith I applied for the Basic Leadership School (BLS) and to be staff on the Snowboarders DTS starting in June, but God had other plans. The base was currently in need of a person to be registrar in the office, and they offered me the position. I still got to do the BLS and in the mean time I got to hang out with the students and staff of the Snowboarding DTS. Then, in November I decided it was time to staff a school. Through much prayer and deliberation, I applied to staff YWAM Oxford’s Around the World in 80 Days DTS (AW80) that starts in February. They accepted me and I had a blast staffing that school. During that time, God taught me a lot about myself as I took the focus off of myself and put it on the students I was serving. I got to co-lead an outreach team to S.E. Asia and graduate from the BLS. Through this time God grew me even more. About two weeks before the end of outreach I got an email from back in Oxford. The base was looking for staff for there up-and-coming school, the Justice DTS. The minute I read that email, I knew that’s where I needed to be for the next season. So, here I am. Staffing round two and loving it.
